South Australia encompasses more than 983,000 square kilometres, and most of that is desert – but don’t let that put you off.
South of Adelaide the delightful Fleurieu Peninsula leads to Kangaroo Island, home to natural wonders including Remarkable Rocks, giant boulders carved into curious shape by the elements, and the Australian sea lion colony at Seal Bay.
Roads into the outback lead to the outstanding scenery and great bushwalking of the Flinders Ranges, and the desert itself is spectacular in its own right.
